Haemostasis in fulminant hepatic failure.

different treatments. Saunders carries out an exchange transfusion routinely if the patient remains in deep coma after 24 hours. In another personal series (from the Hospital Beaujon, Clichy) the results were quite different.1" Between 1952 and 1969 77 patients with severe viral hepatitis were seen, of whom 75 were in coma. Of 56 patients treated conservatively 13 survived, whereas there were no survivors in the 21 treated by corticosteroids, exchange transfusion, cross circulation, or hyperbaric oxygen. However, it is again quite likely that the more severe cases were treated by the more active measures. In the F.H.F.S. study of 101 patients in whom no treatment procedures were undertaken 10% survived,' while 24% of 166 patients lived in whom exchange transfusions were done. Thus no firm conclusions can be drawn about the value of exchange transfusion in the management of fulminant hepatic failure. Indeed the preliminary results in the first randomly allocated and controlled trial of exchange transfusion in fulninant hepatitis shows a higher mortality in the treated group."7 References

Glyphosate Poisoning with Acute Fulminant Hepatic Failure
Background: Glyphosate containing herbicides are widely used the world over. They are marketed as nontoxic to humans, but numerous studies have showed that these glyphosate-based herbicides (GlySH) can cause multiorgan damage.1 Recent reports of animal studies on rats have raised a doubt of liver damage after long term exposure to GlySH. Case Presentation: a young male had chronic exposure to G...

Mortality rates for fulminant hepatic failure range between 50% and 90%. Several independent factors influence survival: age, etiology, depth and duration of the encephalopathy, and prevention of complications. The main causes of fulminant hepatic failure are hepatotropic viruses, adverse drug effects, and toxins (Table 1). All major hepatotropic viruses can induce fulminant hepatic failure. We...
متن کاملAn animal model of fulminant hepatic failure in the rat.
A reproducible animal model of fulminant hepatic failure was developed by intraperitoneal administration of D-galactosamine hydrochloride to Sprague-Dawley rats. Biochemical and morphological hepatic injury and brain edema resembled human fulminant hepatic failure. This model would facilitate further studies of the pathogenesis of brain dysfunction and evaluation of treatment in fulminant hepat...
